What in Heaven's name is "NEW MEDIA"?

So radio has taken a backseat while I discover the joys and frustrations of new media for a term. Honestly, it is fascinating. I feel like a kid learning to read. But 'new media' is so blase a term to describe what I am learning to do. This medium is very new to me, but otherwise I don't know why they called it that. I am learning to put all the audio work I have done into a visual online context, and I am realising I had underestimated the importance of straight lines, pretty colours and "web-safe fonts" (the paper Vanessa just gave me had that as its heading, and I thought it would make me sound more knowledgable than I am...). But essentially I came here to learn how to design a website, as well as become more knowledgable about the internet. Simply put, I would like the world to hear my work, that's what every journalist hopes for to a certain extent I think. And by using the internet I can make that happen. I have listened to some of the most inspiring radio documentaries on a site called soundportraits.org and this kind of stuff isn't heard on commercial or public service radio in South Africa. And this is the kind of radio I would like to make. I am really interested in online radio stations, and I have heard so much about podcasting and things such as this, so I intend to bleed Vanessa dry for all the information I can get:) I am really concerned about finding a job after these 7 weeks, but I think there are many more options available for us poor radio folk thanks to the web, and I hope to be able to make it work for me.
